Acupuncture treats Migraines and Headaches

If you suffer from headaches, you’re not alone. People experience some form of a severe headache at some point in their lives. Whether you experience minor headache pain or severe migraines, headaches can take valuable time out of your day and life and leave you searching desperately for relief. One way people seek relief is by reaching for over-the-counter drugs or prescribed medications. This is fine in the short run and can help relieve some to the pain, but unfortunately, common headache medications do not address the root causes. That's why they return. When medications are used over long periods of time, they can cause unwanted side effects and are toxic to the liver. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine offer an alternative, painless, safe and effective approach to relieving headache pain without causing any harmful side effects.

Acupuncture treatment incorporates a comprehensive diagnostic protocol that addresses the root causes of your headaches. Treatment is aimed at ridding your headache pain completely so that you don’t experience the pain in the future either.

There are many factors in TCM theory that play a key role in determining the root causes of a headache. These include genetics, your emotional health, career and stress, social and exercise activities, diet, dental hygiene, physical trauma and possibly your hormonal state. With TCM, headaches are diagnosed according to the specific symptoms you are experiencing, times of occurrence, location on the head, types of pain, triggers, and remedies that have provided relief.

We recommend that you try to keep track of when your headaches start. Migraine sufferers may find it especially helpful to keep a diary of symptoms and possible causes. Triggers might include anything from eating chocolate, drinking coffee, stress, anxiety, or inhaling specific smells. Pin pointing these triggers and avoiding them whenever possible helps us help you.

The pain that headache and migraine sufferers endure can impact every aspect of their lives. Acupuncture can offer powerful relief without the side effects that prescription and over-the-counter drugs can cause. Acupuncture and herbal medicine have been used to relieve headaches and migraines, as well as the underlying causes, for thousands of years and is a widely accepted form of treatment for headaches in our society.

Diagnosis with Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine does not recognize migraines and recurring headaches as one particular syndrome. Instead, it aims to treat the specific symptoms that are unique to each individual using a variety of techniques such as acupuncture, herbs, tui-na massage, and electro-stimulation to restore imbalances found in the body.

The Acupuncture Treatment
Acupuncture points to treat headaches are located all over the body. During the acupuncture treatment, tiny needles will be placed in your legs, arms, shoulders, and perhaps even your big toe!

There seems to be little sensitivity to the insertion of acupuncture needles. They are so thin that several acupuncture needles can fit into the middle of a hypodermic needle. Occasionally, there is a brief moment of discomfort as the needle penetrates the skin, but once the needles are in place, most people relax and even fall asleep for the duration of the treatment.

The length, number and frequency of treatments will vary with each patient. Typical treatments last from 40 to 60 minutes. Some symptoms are relieved after the first treatment, while more severe or chronic conditions often require multiple treatments.
