Automobile Accidents

Have you incurred injuries as the result of being involved in an Automobile Accident also known as an MVA (Motor Vehicle Accident)?

Seattle Acupuncture & Pain Management knows that getting treatment as soon as possible can relieve acute pain conditions and prevent chronic pain from developing.

It is very important to seek medical treatment right away. Don’t wait until you develop scar tissue or chronic pain. The longer the wait, the more difficult it is for the body to repair and reverse scar tissue damage that can develop from lack of appropriate treatment. Receiving acupuncture and Tuina (pronounced twee-nah) massage soon after an injury will help prevent scar tissue and chronic pain from developing.

Whiplash or other related injuries can appear up to 36-48 hours after an accident. If left untreated, whiplash alone can result in years of pain and suffering. Other injuries like strains and sprains, bruising, delayed onset pain and stiffness, or muscle spasms can be treated effectively by both acupuncture and Tuina, which will allow you to recover more quickly.

Head trauma (concussion or bleeding in the brain), back, shoulder and knee trauma, or fractures should be treated in a hospital Emergency Room as soon as possible. Follow up rehabilitative care should be given by a qualified licensed Acupuncture, Physical Therapy, Massage or Chiropractic practitioners.

Why should you see an acupuncturist?

The advantage of acupuncture over physical therapy, massage, or chiropractic care is that acupuncture treats injuries passively.  However, this does not mean the mechanism of healing is passive. This concept is very important because many injuries can not endure any type of movement or manipulation. Acupuncture is called a passive therapy because it doesn’t involve physically moving the injured area; all of the healing work is done internally. Needles are inserted near or on the opposite side of the body to treat the injuries.  The needles stimulate the body’s immune system which helps direct the immune response to the injured area. This is especially important with injured tissues that don’t have a lot of natural blood flow (tendons, ligaments, cartilage). If there is not a lot of blood flow, the immune system can’t work as effectively. Secondly, certain tissue in the body are not genetically programmed to regenerate quickly, or in other words certain tissues have a much longer cell turnover rate - examples are: nerves, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. For these cells, regenerative rates to regain healthy cell tissue can be accelerated through acupuncture treatment.

Beyond its benefits specific to trauma care, acupuncture is a holistic, non-surgical therapy that treats the whole body including the mind and spirit.  Automobile injuries can leave the injured party in a state of frustration, anger, stress; or with insomnia, anxiety, depression, or PTSD, - all relating to a lack of mobility or pain while suffering with a possible loss of income, or having to deal with insurance companies and lawyers.

So how does acupuncture work to relieve pain?

Receiving acupuncture after your injury quickly and effectively diminishes inflammation and pain reducing your rehabilitation time. Treatments are tailored to your sustained injuries to reduce swelling, pain and muscle spasms. Your acupuncturist will provide you with a course of treatment that will get you back on your feet as quickly as possible.

By State law, acupuncture treatments are approved and covered under your automobile insurance Personal Injury Protection (PIP) rider.  This means that in Washington State, Acupuncture care is completely covered by your car insurance following an insured accident.  You don’t need a referral to see an acupuncturist.  Seattle Acupuncture & Pain Management specializes in motor vehicle accident rehabilitative care.  We can speed up your recovery and get your health back on track.
